Nolwenn Leroy, the world is stone : elle est de retour !

Après avoir largement passé en revue les différentes prestations des invités de l’émission spéciale Starmania du 24 avril 2009,comme promis, voici un petit focus sur la performance de Nolwenn Leroy sur le titre “The world is stone” (version anglaise de “Le monde est stone) interprété par Cyndi Lauper en 1992 avec, en prime, la vidéo de ce beau moment.

Les gens qui suivent Nolwenn Leroy savent qu’à la faveur d’une année d’études passées aux Etats-Unis, cette dernière est devenue totalement bilingue et c’est apparement grâce à cela que France Gall a décidé qu’elle chanterait la version anglaise et non la version originale. Grand bien lui a prit !

Ce n’est d’ailleurs pas la première fois que cette dernière reprenait un titre interprété auparavant par Cyndi Lauper; durant sa dernière tournée, elle s’était déjà approprié avec brio le célèbre “Time after time” de la chanteuse américaine et ne partait donc en terrain totalement inconnu sur le plateau de France 2.

Après un rapide discours d’introduction de la part de France Gall, Nolwenn nous a prouvé que, malgré une longue absence dûe à l’enregistrement de son troisième album, sa voix est toujours aussi pure, avec à la clef, des nuances de plus en plus précises et une intensité toujours au rendez-vous lorsqu’il faut “tenir la note”. On peut l’affirmer sans trop de retenue, Nolwenn s’est une nouvelle fois hissée au niveau de Cyndi Lauper.

Comme expliqué dans l’article précédent, la prestation est en fait une sorte de clip directement filmé sur le plateau… et le moins que l’on puisse dire, c’est que le charme de la belle opère toujours. Dans un décor minimaliste, uniquement vêtue d’une robe blanche légère (qui aura sans doute fait penser au clip d’Inévitablement pour les fans de la première heure), Nolwenn évolue à pieds nus et joue avec la caméra. Le tout est magnifiquement filmé par l’équipe de France 2 qui n’en demandait pas tant.

Au final, nul besoin d’un décor riche ou de danseurs/figurants pour compléter le tableau comme durant les autres clips de l’émission, la seule présence de Nolwenn suffit à faire vivre la chanson et son charisme naturel irradie l’écran. Au lieu d’user d’une énumération fastidieuse de superlatifs pour qualifier le rendu final, je vous propose plutôt de regarder la vidéo :

Cette nouvelle performance de qualité saura donc combler les amateurs qui attendent impatiemment la sortie du prochain album qui, rappelons-le, sera en partie en anglais… Les dernières rumeurs l’annoncent mystérieusement en Mai sans qu’aucun communiqué officiel ne les confirme mais on sait à présent que Nolwenn est “sortie du studio”… Wait & see !

Magnifique interprétation, France Gall ne s’est pas trompée sur l’interpréte pour ce magnifique Titre version Anglaise.
Mais la version Française aurait été aussi un pur bonheur.
Tout en retenue et pas besoin d’artifice sa merveilleue voix vous fait voyager et vous emporte.
Nolwenn bientot de retour avec son 3° opus
Qui en partie sera en Anglais.
Nolwenn s’est investie autant dans la composition que dans l’écriture.
Elle sort de studio et nous ofrira celui ci pour la rentrée pour notre bonheur a tous.

Que dire de +
Nolwenn, magnifique, très sensuelle et sa voix ! La VOIX ! cette pureté, ce velours, ses nuances…Un pur moment de bonheur !
Elle est, à ce jour, sans conteste la plus belle voix du paysage musical francophone…et oserais-je le dire …oui…du paysage musical international ! en tout cas du même niveau que Joan Baez ou Barbara Streisand, ou Sarah Brighman…
et bien meilleure, pour moi que Céline Dion, Mariah Careh etc…

oui, voix sublime, interprétation magistrale, ce n’était pas the world is stone mais “un monde parfait” pendant 4 minutes… les chercheurs de petite bête pourront toujours dire qu’elle aurait pu “pousser” un peu plus, je ne suis pas d’accord c’est justement cette interprétation toute en nuance qui nous a fait rêver. merci Nolwenn

NOLWENN LEROY??? Bien meilleure que Celine Dion et Mariah Carey? Non, franchement, ca me fait doucement rigoler quoi!!!!! Mais vous parlez de qui? Oui, elle sait chanter ( j’aime pas trop sa voix , il faut l’avouer ) mais vraiment pas plus que ca!! Barbara Streisand, n’a rien a voir avec Nolwenn Leroy!!!!

Hi Derek !

I respect your opinion about Nolwenn but, obviously, I really don’t agree with you. She’s probably one of the greatest french voices you can listen to nowadays. Of course, in this song, she’s not demonstrating all of her vocal skills. She’s able to sing whatever she wants, from ballad to lyric chant with a perfect accuracy, which is very unusual.
And I don’t understand when you say that she doesn’t know how to act like a singer… Have you seen her during her last Summer Tour ? I think you would change your mind.

You’re from Greece are you ? I would like to know how you discovered Nolwenn and also how did you find this blog ? I would be very interested to know that ;-) . You seem to like female voices, who are your favorites ?

Hi to you back! Well, in fact I’m an American living in Greece. My girlfriend is French ( from Vichy) actually, and she used to watch this French TV show, Star Academy. I’m a chef d’orchestre and I’ve been living in France for many years. In 2002 we were still living in France, so we got to “know” Nolwenn for obvious reasons…Thanks to her, I’m very familiar with French speaking singers.

I’d openly say that my favorite Star Academy participant was Sofia Essaidi. Not only do I admire her vocal skills, but I also think she’s an incredible show woman ( with a very sweet and “correct” voice). I also really appreciated Gregory Lemarchal.

As far as other singers are concerned ( on the international platform), I’d say I like Mariah Carey ( simply for her voice), Barbara Streisand or Leona Lewis and occasionally Whitney Houston. Now, regarding French speaking singers, I’d go for Celine Dion, Isabelle Boulay and even… Lara Fabian. Celine and Lara great technique, Isabelle wonderful ” timbre”.

Yes, I have already seen Nolwenn in a concert. It was in 2007 I think, in December, in Clermont Ferrand. As you can easily understand I know music, so she can’t impress me saying that she knows how to play piano, violin etc. She knows VERY VERY simple melodies that even my 4 year old niece can play! Of course you may add that other French singers can’t even touch a piano…I’d say you’d have a point there.

Regarding her voice, is AVERAGE. Maybe it’s sth great for French people, but on the international platform, she’s average. ” Run of the mill” as we say. I insist that she doesn’t know how to handle her body on stage and that she absolutely can’t move. Then again, it’s my opinion! Oh…and I’m a chef d’orchestre, believe me she doesn’t sing with perfect accuracy. Î¥es, most of the time she sings correctly but still she doesn’t know how to breath right and “control” her voice. However, I think she’s a very sweet and humble girl with a lot of humour.
So, thanks for asking my point of view, you sound extremely kind. Sorry for the enormous amount of words!

Actually, I love amouts of words as you can see on this blog =)

In fact, we have pretty the same tastes about singers, I like all the ones you mentioned; especially Isabelle Boulay who was at Paris’s Olympia Hall last March. I saw the show, it was just awesome !

I also agree with you about Sofia Essaidi, she’s probably curently the best french showgirl who is able to dance and sing well at the same time.
It’s true that Nolwenn has sometimes difficulties to move her body on stage; she’s making progress in this field but I agree it’s still insufficient. The fact is that I really love her voice so I don’t care too much about this weakness. ;-) I think that a lot of female singers (including some of those you mentioned) have a great career without being a showgirl.

I never heared her saying that she was a great musician; sometimes, she accompanies herself on the piano but it’s quite rare. She’s aware that she’s not a maestro ^^.

As you probably know, she’s currently making her third record which would be partially in english. So it will be a good test for her on the international platform. Concerning her breathing; I will pay more attention about it in the future; I’m interested in singer voices but I do not pretend to be an expert like you seem to be.

Personnellement , je n’aime pas comparer les artistes entre elles sauf quand vraiment il y a de grosses différences de technique vocale.
Après le timbre de la voix c’est personnel et il se trouve que la voix de Nolwenn m’atteint toujours , c’est ainsi et inexplicable.

Elle possède une excellente technique de chant, est musicienne et a un grand coeur et cela se ressent à chaque fois qu’elle interprête une chanson. De plus elle aime bien se fondre dans un personnage qui correspond exactement à la chanson. Comme je l’avais aimé par ex dans “Si vous partez en voyage ” clip avec François Morel, une vraie comédienne en herbe. Dotée d’yeux magnifiques , Nolwenn envoûte sans le vouloir , nous capte.

Dans l’interprétation de “the world is stone” j’ai trouvé qu’elle avait bien été filmée à part quelques prises de vues trop rapides , mais l’ensemble était joli ; il ressortait de ces images une grande pureté, un grand dépouillé , une Nolwenn aérienne, une Elfe . Sa voix allait avec , elle a voulu chanter cela avec une grande simplicité , elle est pour moi la seule à posséder dans la douceur ce timbre , ce phrasé , ce vibrato , cette voix de velours. D’autres artistes que j’aime bien ont de la puissance vocale mais manque souvent de nuances , elle , elle sait manier les nuances à la manière des chanteuses d’opéra et ce n’est jamais plat.

Dommage que certains n’ont pas encore apprécié cette manière de chanter qui lui est propre et qui est sa marque de fabrique. Nolwenn ne copie personne , Nolwenn fera carrière c’est certain, la critique de certains ne veut rien dire , ce fut ainsi pour des très grands , justement les gens sont plus prompts à critiquer des talents que les autres.

Qu’essayont de nous faire croire ?

Par ailleurs , Nolwenn a fait des variations sur cette interprétation très personnelles et j’ai trouvé que vraiment c’était d’une beauté pure.

Nolwenn n’essaye de faire de la prouesse vocale mais d’interprêter , d’affirmer son identité artistique.

I agree 100% with Derek. But again, everything is a matter of taste. For me Nolwenn’s voice is below average in all songs! I’m truly sorry! It’s what I believe! Oh, and I don’t criticize her, I’m just expressing my opinion, I wouldn’t give a damn to criticize her.

I truly madly deeply LOVE this song!!! I’m glad that French singers sing Cyndi Lauper! Now, it’s true that her voice isn’t so interesting and sometimes even annoying when she says ” I’ve had all I can tAAAke, the caAAALll” it’s quite unpleasant but still I’m so happy she sang Cyndi Lauper, I love Cyndi Lauper!!! Maybe her voice is better in French songs, I’ve never listened to her. But here, she doesn’t impress me at all. But I love her just for singing ” The World is Stone”!

Hi!!!! Well, the world is stone is one of my favorite songs,I absolutely love Cyndi Lauper, and when I taped it on Google, several results came up, several versions of this song, and I accidentally found this site ( which was in french, I’m in love with France) and I saw a French singer singing it! I wasn’t going to write a comment, but since there were other people writing in English, I decided to make a comment,too!!!Of course, I have no idea who that girl is,but never mind!I understand French too,but if I wrote in French,you would probably kill yourself,hihihihihihihi!!!!But you are French, I suppose,no?

Oh,I just saw another VIDEO on this blog! I LOVED this song ( mourir d’aimer)! I heard it for the first time by Nana Mouskouri( duet with Aznavour). I’m a fan of Aznavour… he still has a very moving voice, although he’s 85!I also like “Hier Encore”,I think that’s his song too! That was a nice performance, but I openly prefer the version Aznavour-Nana Mouskouri.
